It is not uncommon for graduate students to be welcomed into the professional world with limited job opportunities, high competition, and for most tremendous amounts of student debt. As for graduate architect students, there just may be a solution to help with student loan re-payment.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is proposing legislation that offers architecture school graduates loan re-payment assistance to those who contribute their services to their communities. The National Design Services Act (NDSA) provides this assistance to those that work at community design centers by securing grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to reduce loan balances of participating students.

This proposal is currently not law, but is being presented to members of Congress. If passed, this proposal would increase the support available to design centers, furthering their role as a connection between the architecture profession, architecture students, and local community stakeholders.
