For this week’s Ask OMS answer, we are supplying the definition of the architectural term, dormer. As a reminder, the purpose of Ask OMS is for you to post your questions related to architecture, and then we’ll provide the answers.

Dormer:  A vertical structure, usually housing a window that projects from a sloping roof and is covered by a separate roof structure, as depicted in the photo below. Dormers are typically used in either original construction or as later additions. Its main purpose is to create usable space in the roof by adding headroom and/or by enabling addition of windows.
