This week’s Ask OMS answer addresses the process for working with an architect. We invite you to Ask OMS by submitting your questions.

In most scenarios, the architectural design process consists of five phases. As your organization begins to work with your architect, it is important to know where you are in the process in order to meet the necessary objectives of the project. These five phases of an architectural project are:

Originate
This phase includes all of the discussions, thought, and exploration that leads to consensus that your organization needs architectural assistance. This phase ends once your organization decides to move forward with the project.

Focus
During this phase, the scope, features, purpose, and functionality of the project is defined. This is the time when you make your selection as to whom will be your architect, and establish an owner-architect agreement. Together, a vision for the project will be developed, and the architect will assist you on exploring the needs and services necessary to achieve the goals of the project.

Design
Once the requirements have been determined, the architect begins to give shape to your project through drawings and written specifications. It is important to establish a clear-decision making process with your architect, as well as input on the design project. Doing so will lead a more defined look to your building and/or interior, and will ensure that all objectives of the project focus have been achieved.

Build
After it has been the designed, a contractor will begin constructing the project, and thus becomes the most active member of the team during this phase. It is critical to upkeep good communication with your project team to clearly address any changes that may arise during construction.

Occupy
This phase begins, and remains ongoing, once the project is finished and is ready to be utilized. It is important to address your architect your satisfaction of the project, and are able use this experience to inform future work.
